Ethos & Vision
Friesian Publishing is a boutique literary press founded by award-winning novelist Andrew Chatora, whose work has become a vital contribution to contemporary African and diaspora literature. Rooted in Chatora's lifelong commitment to interrogating identity, race, migration, and the politics of belonging, the imprint exists to elevate writers whose stories disrupt the familiar and illuminate the overlooked.
At its core, Friesian Publishing exists to champion writers whose voices resist easy categorisation and whose stories unsettle the familiar. We are drawn to work that speaks back to dominant narratives, that illuminates silences, and that insists on complexity where simplification has too often prevailed. Our focus is literary fiction and memoir that is intellectually rigorous, culturally grounded, and emotionally honest.
We publish writers who explore the lived realities of displacement and return, fractured citizenships, inherited histories, and the uneasy spaces between home and exile. These are narratives shaped by resilience and contradiction, stories that refuse spectacle, favour depth over trend, and privilege craft, integrity, and truth.
Friesian Publishing is supported by a vibrant and discerning editorial collective of award-winning authors, poets, editors, cultural critics, and committed bibliophiles. Together, we bring deep industry knowledge, editorial precision, and a shared belief in literature's power to endure, disrupt, and transform. Our role is not to dilute a writer's voice, but to refine, strengthen, and elevate it, ensuring each book reaches its fullest literary potential.
Our Vision
We envision a literary landscape in which underrepresented voices are not peripheral, provisional, or tokenised, but central to the cultural conversation. Friesian Publishing seeks to cultivate a space where writers can work with creative freedom, artistic seriousness, and global reach, shaping literature on their own terms rather than conforming to market expectation.
Our ambition is simple and uncompromising: to publish work that lasts, to back writers who matter, and to build a catalogue that stands as both cultural record and literary challenge.
Our Mission
Friesian Publishing exists to publish bold, ambitious literary fiction and memoir that expand how stories are told and who gets to tell them. Founded by novelist and cultural critic Andrew Chatora, the imprint champions work that engages with identity, migration, race, belonging, and power without reducing literature to labels or limiting it to prescribed categories.
We support underrepresented voices while remaining open to narratives that resist easy definition, challenge convention, and go against the grain. Our guiding belief is that literature should reflect the full complexity of human experience, speak with artistic courage, and endure beyond passing trends.
Inspired by the Friesian horse, an emblem of strength, poise, and unyielding spirit, our mission is to back work that is confident in its craft, fearless in its ideas, and distinctive in its voice. As an independent press, we work closely with our authors to refine craft, honour voice, and bring each book to its widest and most deserving audience. Our mission is simple: to publish work of depth, originality, and lasting cultural value.
