Dear Reader,
When I began writing Diaspora Dreams, I had no idea that the stories I carried, stories of migration, dislocation, identity, and the fragile search for belonging, would resonate so widely. Over the years, through Where the Heart Is, Harare Voices and Beyond, and my other works, I've come to understand something essential: voices from the margins are not marginal at all. They are central to the human story.
And yet, too often, these voices struggle to find a home in mainstream publishing. That is why I founded Friesian Publishing. This imprint is more than a publishing venture. It is a cultural intervention. A space where writers who have been overlooked, underestimated, or unheard can bring their stories into the world with dignity, care, and artistic freedom. My own journey from Mutare to England, from teacher to novelist has taught me that literature is one of the most powerful tools we have for challenging assumptions, expanding empathy, and reshaping the narratives that define us. A befitting leaf I also gleaned from Michelle Obama's debut memoir: Becoming, which I totally resonated with.
At Friesian Publishing, we champion fiction that interrogates identity, migration, race, and belonging with honesty and courage. We seek work that disrupts the familiar, unsettles the comfortable, and illuminates the lived realities of those navigating the edges of society. We believe in stories that provoke thought, stir emotion, and open doors. As our remit is broad, we seek to avoid rigid categorisation.
If you are a writer whose voice has been sidelined, whose experiences defy easy categorisation, or whose imagination pushes against the boundaries of convention, this imprint is for you. We are building a community; one rooted in authenticity, artistic excellence, and a shared commitment to widening the world through literature.
